Beyond Visual Range Lethality

The US Air Force is developing a new beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) called the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM). The AIM-260 is intended to replace the current AIM-120 AMRAAM, which has been the primary weapon for BVR air-to-air combat in US and NATO inventories for over three decades.

Extended Range and Enhanced Capabilities

The AIM-260 is designed to offer extended range and enhanced capabilities over the AIM-120. It will feature an advanced seeker with improved target detection and tracking capabilities, as well as a new propulsion system that provides greater speed and maneuverability. The missile will also be equipped with a data link that allows it to be guided by off-board sensors, such as those on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Bridging the Gap

The Air Force is planning a multiyear procurement of the AIM-260 to bridge the gap until its successor, the highly classified AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM), is available. The JATM is expected to be a more advanced and capable missile than the AIM-260, but it is not expected to be ready for production until the late 2020s.

The development of the AIM-260 is a critical part of the Air Force's efforts to maintain air superiority in the face of growing threats from potential adversaries. The missile's extended range and enhanced capabilities will give the Air Force a significant advantage in future air-to-air combat.
